Chapter 10

--------------------------------------------------------

Mr. ‘Why Not?’

The word “antagonist” derives from the Greeks, meaning “opponent, competitor, rival.” In theatrical circles, the antagonist is the character who opposes the protagonist, the story’s hero. In politics, it is largely the same. Though the conflict is burdensome, the protagonist’s successes are ultimately defined by the resistance of the antagonist; even the antagonist might be transformed through a subtle reciprocity and rapprochement. Neither all good nor all bad, both characters are shaped by context. Each needs the other to achieve their aspirations. And sometimes – in rare moments – they form an unspoken alliance, a muted empathy that helps them both. Adversaries in life, friends in posterity, each is ultimately grateful for the challenges from the other that helped them stake out their own place in the world.
